Glazed donut nails are ultimately a gel manicure, topped with chrome powder. They mimic the sweet treat they’re named after- particularly the slick and smooth layer of glaze that tops the donut.
Some say it all began when Hailey Bieber stepped out with a glazed‑doughnut manicure at the 2022 Met Gala. From that moment on, the trend took off, becoming so instantly recognisable that requesting “glazed‑doughnut nails” soon needed no explanation at all. Glazed nails aren’t going anywhere, so we are so excited to share the return of our Chrome Effects powders, including the viral glaze that defined the glazed donut trend thanks to celeb nail artist, Zola.
How do I apply?
Step 1: Before you begin, prep nails thoroughly following OPI’s gel prep protocol.
Step 2: Apply one THIN coat of Base Coat- cure for 30 seconds in the OPI Starlight Lamp.
Step 3: Apply and cure 2 coats of any GelColor shade- cure for 30 seconds in the OPI Starlight Lamp.
Step 4: Apply one thin coat of Super Gloss No-Wipe Top Coat- cure for 15 seconds ONLY in the Starlight Lamp.
Step 5: Rub chrome powder firmly into the nail surface using small circular motions. Dust off any excess with a clean cosmetic brush, gently file free edge and cure for remaining 15 seconds in the Starlight Lamp.
Step 6: Apply and cure 2 coats of Super Gloss Top Coat– cure for 30 seconds in the Starlight Lamp.
PRO TIP: You may want an extra ‘chrome’ Super Gloss so not to contaminate your non-chrome top.

Chrome performance is technique-driven. Cure, load, and pressure- not the pigment- determine success.
Follow proper OPI GelColor prep, base and colour application. Cure Super Gloss No Wipe Top Coat for 15 seconds in the OPI STAR LIGHT Gel Lamp, apply chrome and cure for the remaining 15 seconds before adding 2 x coats of Super Gloss Top Coat.

BASICS & COMPATIBILITY
What is chrome powder made of? Chrome powder is made of cosmetic-grade effect pigments (metallic, pearl, or interference platelets) used in nail coatings—applied in their pure, binder-free form.
Is chrome powder different from pigments in gel or lacquer? No. The pigment itself is the same. The difference is that chrome powder has no resin system, so performance depends entirely on surface condition and technique.
Does chrome chemically bond to gel? No. Chrome adheres through mechanical grip, surface tension, and electrostatic attraction, not chemical bonding.
CURE & SURFACE QUESTIONS
Why does chrome need a soft cure or no-wipe surface? Chrome needs a surface that is stable but still receptive. A soft cure provides enough grip for platelets to seat without sliding or rejecting.
What happens if the gel is under-cured? The surface remains mobile, allowing chrome platelets to shift, smear, or dull- often causing streaking and early wear.
What happens if the gel is over-cured? The surface becomes too rigid and slick, preventing platelets from seating evenly and leading to patchy pick-up and poor adhesion.
How do I know the surface is cured “just right”? Chrome burnishes smoothly with light pressure, looks mirror-like immediately, and does not move during Top Coat application. Cure Super Gloss No Wipe Top Coat for 15 seconds in the OPI STAR LIGHT Gel Lamp, apply chrome and cure for the remaining 15 seconds before adding 2x coats of Super Gloss Top Coat.
Does lamp type or wattage matter? Yes. Inconsistent lamp output, aging bulbs, or poor nail placement can cause uneven cure, especially at edges.
APPLICATION & TECHNIQUE
How much chrome powder should I use? A small, controlled amount. Chrome should reach full coverage quickly without piling or grain.
Why does my chrome look streaky or patchy? Most often caused by over-cure, uneven pressure, or motion bias- not the powder itself.
Why does chrome drag when I apply top coat? This usually indicates under-cure or overloaded chrome that wasn’t fully seated
Why does my chrome look dull instead of mirror-like? Common causes include too much product, excessive pressure, or platelet misalignment.
How much pressure should I use? Light, even pressure. Chrome needs guidance, not force. Too much pressure tilts and stacks platelets.
WEAR & PERFORMANCE
How long should a chrome manicure last? A properly applied chrome service should last 2–3 weeks, matching the gel service underneath.
Is it normal for chrome to dull over time? Slight softening of mirror intensity near the end of wear is normal. Early dulling is not.
Why does chrome wear off at the edges first? Edge wear usually points to under-cure at the perimeter, poor sealing, or excessive product load.
Why is my chrome peeling or flaking? This is not normal wear and indicates an application or cure issue.
TOP COAT & SEALING
What top coat works best over chrome? Apply OPI Chrome Powders on top of Super Gloss No Wipe Top Coat and finish with 2x coats of Super Gloss Top Coat.
Should I seal chrome with one or two layers? 2 coats of Super Gloss Top Coat over the chrome application will provide extra protection and high shine.
Why does chrome shift or smear during top coat application? This points to under-cure or unstable chrome placement.
Do I need to cleanse or buff before sealing chrome? No. Chrome should be sealed directly once properly burnished and dusted.
TOOLS & PRODUCTS
Is a sponge or silicone applicator better? Usually this is down to personal preference however, sponge = faster coverage, distributes powder evenly, provides controlled pressure, and reduces drag lines. Whereas Silicone = precise load, better pigment alignment which can mean longer wear.
Can I reuse chrome applicators? Yes, if clean and intact. Worn applicators reduce consistency.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Chrome looks good day one but dulls quickly- why? Usually under-cure or excess product load.
Chrome won’t stick- what’s wrong? Most often over-cure or incompatible surface.
Chrome looks thick and grainy- what caused it? Too much product or excessive pressure.
Why does chrome look different on different nails? Uneven cure, inconsistent pressure, or variable product load.
Why does chrome fail even when I follow the steps? Chrome has a narrow application window- small deviations matter. Small deviations (over-cure, contamination, uneven pressure, aggressive top coat application) disrupt the mirror effect, but controlled technique turns chrome into a consistent, high-performance finish.
