The FHA Story

The FHA Story

1993 - Founding of the FHBF
There has been a trade association for freelance hairdressers since 1993. Prior to this, independent hairdressers had no recognised place in the industry and the sector was largely dismissed. This was because there were no set standards for the sector, and those working outside of a salon were perceived as unqualified, unregulated and unprofessional.
Sheila Abrahams had a very different vision and, along with Heather Hopkins, made the decision to form a trade association which would set standards for the freelance sector.
The Freelance Hair & Beauty Federation (FHBF) was launched in October 1993, giving freelancers a voice and providing access to many services that had previously been denied to freelancers. The organisation helped to elevate the industry and allowed freelancers to be recognised for running professional businesses and undertaking regular education and personal development.
Industry manufacturers and leading hairdressers soon recognised the role of the FHBF and supported the organisation with training, exclusive retail, discounts and further opportunities for members. We are proud to have Patrick Cameron as an honorary member, and are supported by brands including Wella, L’Oreal Professional, Matrix and Indola.
2014 - Re-branding and re-focusing
Freelance hairdressers have now had their own organisation for more than 20 years, and in 2014 for the FHBF was rebranded as The Freelance Hairdressers’ Association (the FHA).
Today, the freelance sector is well established with recognised industry standards and continues to grow with diverse career opportunities ranging from running a home salon to renting a chair to session work. However, no matter what the job, when you see the FHA logo you know that the business is being run by a qualified, fully insured, professional operator.
The FHA has built a complete support system for self-employed hairdressers, providing a professional identity and creating a community of like-minded people.
Our members have access to a virtual staffroom, where anyone can seek advice, share experiences, find support and celebrate achievements. The community is invaluable, and is replicated in our regional groups, where members can come together in person to find support from like-minded professionals.
Training remains a high priority for all our members, and the FHA provides great value education both of our own and in partnership with leading manufacturers and industry icons. We also host two live educational events a year – Inspire! and Seasons Sensation; held in summer and pre-Christmas respectively, these sessions provide training, inspiration and the chance to network and socialise with both brands and other members. We also host the UK Freelance Awards as part of Inspire! to recognise the wealth of talent within the self-employed sector.
2023 - 30th Anniversary Year and a special presentation
After a fabulous year celebrating its 30th Anniversary, The FHA continues strong, providing exemplary service and support to its community. Not only that but Sheila Abrahams, our founder, was awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her remarkable contributions to the freelance hairdressing industry.
The MBE, announced in the King’s New Year Honours List, recognises Sheila for her unwavering dedication to supporting and uplifting freelance hairdressers across the nation. With over three decades of commitment to the industry, Sheila and the FHA has played a pivotal role in fostering a sense of community, providing education, and advocating for the rights and interests of freelance hairdressers.
Now and onwards
The industry’s trade association has come a long way from its early beginnings. We have grown over the years by listening to our members and responding to their changing needs. As a member of the Freelance Hairdressers’ Association, you may work alone – but you don’t have to be on your own.

Q and A with FHA Founder Sheila Abrahams

1. What are the biggest challenges freelance hairdressers face today, and how does the FHA help them overcome these?
Freelance hairdressers face several challenges, from managing their time effectively to navigating the financial and business aspects of self-employment. One of the biggest hurdles is time management. Deciding the hours they want to work while setting clear boundaries that clients respect. The FHA provides guidance on how to structure a schedule that suits your lifestyle while maintaining a professional approach.
Insurance is also a crucial factor that many freelancers overlook. Ensuring they have the right coverage protects them and their business from potential risks and it can be quite overwhelming with choosing the correct cover. The FHA offers specialised insurance policies tailored to the needs of freelance hairdressers, covering various workspaces and including essential features like skin testing.
Financial planning is another critical challenge. Running a business requires a different skill set. It’s not just about determining service prices but understanding budgeting, tax responsibilities, and long-term financial stability. Again, at the FHA we offer resources and support to help members navigate these aspects confidently.
For those who are mobile stylists, visibility is key. The FHA helps freelancers create a strong presence by offering marketing support, including customisable business cards that highlight specialisations, pricing structures, and professional qualifications. Members can access templates to design their price lists and business menus, ensuring that clients are well-informed about services, terms, and pricing updates.
2. Can you share some success stories from members who have benefited from the FHA?
Many members have transformed their careers through the FHA. Julie Dowen, for instance, joined the FHA Art Team, which led her to become a Wella technician, a role she may not have pursued otherwise. Another member aspired of working on a cruise ship, and thanks to my industry connections, this dream became a reality.
Success in competitions is also a highlight for FHA members. Sarah has won multiple awards, demonstrating the level of skill development and industry recognition the FHA fosters. Emma Kortas, another member, has also achieved great success in hairdressing competitions, proving that FHA support and training provide a competitive edge.
4. How does the FHA help freelance hairdressers stay connected and combat isolation?
Freelancing can sometimes feel isolating, but not as an FHA member. Regional groups ran by our FHA reps allow hairdressers to connect, share experiences, and support one another. Additionally, the FHA’s online Facebook group, The Staffroom, is a lively hub of discussion where members can ask for advice, share successes, and stay motivated. I also post regular industry updates in there too so all our members can stay informed.
For more immediate support, we also provide a technical advice helpline, ensuring that members can get expert guidance whenever they need it. Having these touchpoints within the freelance community is invaluable in reducing stress and maintaining confidence.
Industry Insights & Advice
5. How have you seen the freelance hairdressing industry change in recent years?
Freelance hairdressing has evolved significantly. Previously, freelancing was often associated with lower prices and seen as less professional. However, the FHA has helped shift this perception, empowering hairdressers to charge appropriately for their expertise.
The industry is also growing, with more people choosing freelancing as a lifestyle choice, especially since Covid.
6. What advice would you give to someone thinking about going freelance in hairdressing?
The most important step is to set up your business properly. From day one, clients need to see your work as a professional business, not just a hobby. Having a clear business model, structured pricing, and proper terms and conditions helps establish credibility.
The FHA community offers unparalleled support. With a network of experienced freelancers, members can ask questions, seek guidance, and gain confidence knowing they are backed by professionals who have been through the same journey. It’s a career choice that can be incredibly rewarding when done right. Plus when you become a member of the Freelance Hairdressers’ Association, you are automatically provided with a bespoke insurance policy which is one of the, if not the most important thing you’ll need!
7. What are the key business skills a freelance hairdresser should develop to succeed?
Beyond technical hairdressing skills, freelancers must develop strong people skills to handle client relationships professionally. Understanding tax, insurance, and ongoing education is also crucial, staying updated with industry trends ensures that your services remain in demand.
8. How can freelancers stay competitive in an industry that’s constantly evolving?
Education is key. Hands-on training and staying informed about new techniques, products, and trends will keep freelancers ahead of the competition.
FHA Events & Awards
9. What can members expect from FHA events like Inspire?
Inspire is one of the most anticipated events in the FHA calendar. It’s an opportunity for freelancers to come together, update their skills, gain new insights, and refresh their kits. It’s not just about education, it’s about community, inspiration, and celebrating the freelance hairdressing industry. It’s also not just for our FHA members, it’s open to our whole freelancing industry. You just need a ticket!
10. Can you tell us more about the FHA Freelance Awards and why they are important?
The FHA Freelance Awards are the only competition dedicated entirely to freelance hairdressers. They provide a platform to showcase talent, gain recognition, and boost confidence. These awards celebrate the achievements of our freelancers, giving them the same industry spotlight as salon-based professionals.
